E-invoicing mandate — Switzerland

The format is prescribed, the route is not: the invoice must be structured, but which channel carries it to the recipient is left to the parties. A format tool is sufficient here as well.

The stages over time

  1. 1/1/2016

Switzerland · to public authorities in force

The obligation applies solely to suppliers of the federal administration and only above a contract value of CHF 5,000; below that the paper invoice remains admissible. Cantons and municipalities each regulate it themselves. There is no obligation between businesses in Switzerland.

Legal basis: Bundesratsbeschluss vom 8. Oktober 2014 · Last reviewed: 10/27/2026
